When You Tell Me Not to Let Others Get Under My Skin

~

Ten years of age-- Phys-Ed teacher tells me that I need to wear my skin like an elephant wears its skin. "What does an elephant's skin look like?"

I am asked. Grey,

wrinkled--

the first

(the only) adjectives I can think of. I am wrong, apparently. "Elephants have thick skin. You need to have a thicker skin."

(Doesn't he know the skin of an elephant remembers every heartbreak?)
