Oceanic Folkore
tells stories of a serpent-man
who treads the seven seas,
swallowing the beating hearts of any
drowning girl
he happens upon.
But omitted from the legends
is the malevolent nature
of the swallowed hearts
the noxious venom
perspiring in lieu of blood
poisoning the serpent
poetry
foaming at his mouth.
